Santiam Memorial Hospital is about to get twice as big. In November 2010, hospital officials broke ground on an expansion that will add 50,000 square feet within a four story addition.
“Once complete, we’ll double our size and capacity, adding up to 50 new positions to meet the needs of our growing rural population,” said Terry Fletchall, Santiam Memorial CEO. “This is our biggest expansion to date.”
The new structure will replace an aging section of the hospital, which was originally built in 1953. In addition to patient rooms, the new addition will be home to a new Surgery Center and Family Birth Center.
Expansion couldn’t come at a better time, according to Fletchall. Recent additions in staff expertise and equipment upgrades have resulted in enhanced medical services and specialties new to Santiam Memorial Hospital.
“We continue to expand our medical services to ensure complete care right here in our community,” said Fletchall. “It’s an exciting time for our hospital and our entire region.”
In June 2009, Santiam Memorial Hospital completed construction that expanded and updated its Emergency Department. New staff and equipment were added as a result.
Construction of the latest addition is expected to be complete in summer 2012. The hospital foundation has updated its donation form so that donors may direct their gift to the construction.
All floors have been primed and the first coat of base paint has been applied. The final coat of paint and wall touch-up will begin early in the month of May. The installation of the Precision laminar flow diffuser system within the OR’s and C-section room ceilings is currently underway. The installation of the ceiling grid is complete on all floors with the exception of select areas being left open to accommodate above-ceiling work that is currently in progress. Ceiling tiles, light fixtures, sprinkler heads and HVAC ceiling grilles are being put in place and are being checked for proper fit and operation. Installation of cabinetry, wainscot and wood trim is nearing completion on all floors. Countertop and wall mounted sinks are being placed and trimmed following the completion of the ceramic tile, countertops and wall protection installation in each area.
The installation of the ceramic tile is in progress on all floors, and is being followed by the installation of VCT and sheet vinyl (resilient) flooring within patient rooms. Carpeting at the public areas and hallways will begin early next month following the completion of the patient rooms.
The month of April concluded with the successful setting of the new emergency generator, generator enclosure and generator fuel tank on the recently completed concrete generator pad. The project team is currently focusing on completing the oxygen pad enclosure that sits adjacent to the generator pad.
The project team is continuing Tuesday and Thursday morning project safety meetings for all onsite staff, subcontractors and vendors to discuss current safety concerns and inform all participants of the daily and weekly activities that are scheduled on the jobsite. HSW conducted a company-wide safety stand-down meeting during the month of April in an effort to help refocus worker attention to current jobsite safety practices. Relevant safety concerns from across the company were discussed and reviewed with the team.
